The Center for Disease Control defines depression is a mental illness that can be costly and debilitating to sufferers, noting that it can adversely affect the course and outcome of common chronic conditions, such as arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity.
Depression also can result in increased work absenteeism, short-term disability, and decreased productivity.
Who Tends to be Most Depressed?
According to the CDC, persons 45-64 years of age, women, persons of color, high school dropouts, divorced but not remarried, the unemployed and those without health insurance form the basis for the large majority of persons suffering from depression.
