About the Wimbledon Tournament in the United Kingdom
The Wimbledon Championships or simply Wimbledon, is the longest running and considered the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. First held in 1877 in London, Wimbledon is one of 4 major tournaments referred to as The Grand Slam. The winners of these tournaments determine the top tennis players in the world. In addition to Wimbledon, the Grand Slam includes the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open.
Wimbledon is unique in that the tournament is played on grass rather than a hard court.
The first Wimbledon Championship began on July 9, 2024 and featured only Men’s Singles Tennis. Women’s Singles were added in 1884 and Ladies and Mixed Doubles in 1913.
